Robert Cheeke- Become an Impactful Vegan
For full episode show notes and resources, visit: www.plantstrongpodcast.com/blog/robert-cheeke
For over 30 years, Robert Cheeke has made a profound impact on the vegan and plant-based lifestyle, both as a champion bodybuilder and a NY Times bestselling author of the book, The Plant-Based Athlete.
His latest book, The Impactful Vegan: How You Can Save More Lives and Make the Biggest Difference for Animals and the Planet is a blueprint for how we can use our time, energy, skills, talents, and resources to make the greatest impact in our daily lives.
Cheeke discusses his definition of effective vegan altruism using your "STRONG-V" to affect change. The episode explores entrepreneurship challenges in the vegan industry, the impact of women and minorities in veganism, capitalizing on your personal strengths, and the importance of progress over perfection.
Yes, this book is about becoming a more impactful vegan, but the pages and the examples translate into anything that holds our hearts.

Raw foods and vegetables. I believe it's very great for the body. We need muscle mass as well. If doing high raw diet well we shouldn't be skinny. I see a raw foodist who don't have much muscle mass and eat a ton of fruit without combining vegetables. And fruit juices that's just not healthy to drink a lot of fruit juices all the time. Doug has a lot of wise words here.

Enjoyed this so much! I'm going to do more of Fuhrman 's plan. I can’t get as thin as id like with starches. Plus, he's got a point; it's easier to slip if you aren't as strict. My husband thinks he's too strict but he's not losing enough eith unlimited starches.

I personally know about effective altruism - and I see how robert really veers towards it. I personally prefer egoistic and optimistic altruism - because it's something that is able to be built upon - because it's what we do - so we reap the benefits compared to effective altruism - where it's really not known. In certain ways - I feel like they do some egoistic and optimistic altruism - without applying those labels to it - but I didn't fully watch the entire video, so I can't really say for sure. I just feel like this book isn't his final product - that it's a work in progress and he's going to keep trying to get better. He just takes what he knows so far - and provides it to the world. I feel like he's having 10 steps ahead of this as he thinks - that's what I love about him - we'll likely see more yet to come, so everyone's prepping with grabbing his books like this is the beginning of a series lol. This title was part of a book series that I wanted to write - he beat me to it - and I'm all for it. So I'm glad someone wrote it. I got his athlete book in the bundle - I was eyeing it and wanted to buy it but didn't - too expensive, etc. - but when it was in the bundle - I had to get it - and I did and read it!

PLANTSTRONG by Engine 2 - I was born with a congenital heart condition (Tetrology of fallots) and have had 4 open heart surgeries. Then 11 years ago which was about 8 months after my 4th surgery I decided to do away with all animal based foods, initially as a test to see if it was going to help with my high colesterol which I was taking medication for and wasn't doing anything. Within about 6 weeks my level had dropped alot (Vegan at the time). I ended up sticking to the diet. Then on the 18th June, 2024 I saw my Cardiologist and got a shock, the MRI scan that I had a few weeks before hand showed that I had scaring of the heart, and the Cardiologist said he wasn't expecting that. Cardiologist is not sure what the issue is though he thinks it could be Sarcoidosis, so I will be having a PET Scan. As a result of this I have decided to ditch the Vegan diet, which although is healthier in some respects to the SAD diet. So as a result I have decided to go WFPB.

Keep up the great work. I think you have to note that keto does not have to be meat, cheese and fat based. For my own health challenges with my prostate, I have been doing an OMAD plant based low fat diet with low ketone levels between meals. It’s not a hard core keto diet but very light. I do a bit of supplementation with external ketones. Works great.

I suffered from metabolic syndrome (obesity, high cholesterol, high triglycerides, and high blood sugar). I went whole food plant based no sugar oil or salt and I lost 65 pounds, all my conditions greatly improved, my gums stopped bleeding, and erections and energy returned. I used to have an appetite that was never satisfied; whole foods cured it. I no longer use a sleep apnea machine. Finally, the food is cheap-Beans, lentils, rice, potatoes and seasonal apples. Also, I save money by not having to buy pills and visit the Doctor. I am thankful to all the vegans who suffered attacks to reveal the truth to me.

I appreciate the focus on plant based living and honesty about Alzheimer's and family relations. Some of the information about The Course in Miracles was relatable...I always wondered why people liked it and what they got from it. I have been calling people who follow "conscientious capitalism" by the name "compassionate capitalists" and didn't know there was a name for it so I listened to it with interest. I think though it's a mistake to speak on politics in this forum b/c Mackey did not give each group he discussed traditional, rational and progressive folk equal treatment and it detracted from his message. I lean progressive but I'm also very traditional and rational. I went to a Plantstrong immersion with Rip and it was unity building. Mackey spoke on polarization but some of his comments revealed his prejudices about progressives and was not unifying. I don't think synthesizing the beliefs of the "blue and red tribe" is a good idea. I think people learning how to disagree and still cooperate and move forward is a better idea! It sounds like he wanted one political party. (In Canada we have four main parties that are forced to work together) anyway onward with plant strong and pickleball....but maybe not politics!
